Wildblue Communications earns award - At the annual Society of Satellite Professionals (SSPI) awards night WildBlue Communications Inc. were awarded with the 2008 Industry Innovator award due to a string of highly successful applications and service developments.

3/20/2008 – Email Issues Involving POP Forwarding

What is the issue?
It was recently identified that some of our WildBlue customers using email clients (Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Mac Mail) have been receiving previously downloaded mail messages to their email client.

Who did this affect?
This only affected customers that had previously enabled POP forwarding in their Gmail settings and are using email clients.

Why did this occur?
WildBlue customers who previously enabled POP forwarding were impacted by this change.
WildBlue enabled POP forwarding for all of WildBlue’s customers. By making this change, it caused all previously downloaded email messages to download again.
This was a single occurrence; and will only happen again if a customer enables the POP forwarding settings to: Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)

What*are we*going to do?
WildBlue is updating articles to educate customers using email clients on the different POP settings and what to expect based on these changes.
As a result of this issue, WildBlue has cleared all modem usage records for 3/17-3/20. This was done to remove any customer’s usage data that was accumulated because of this issue.

DirecWAY to Protect Satellite Network

Sandvine Technology

Utilized to Identify PC Viruses

Sandvine said that Hughes Network Systems (HNS) selected the Sandvine Attack Traffic Mitigation solution for operation on its U.S.-wide DirecWAY broadband satellite network.
Malware attacks, such as worm outbreaks and their associated denial-of-service (DoS) to customers, can consume significant bandwidth on a service provider's network in a matter of hours. And beyond the impact of "event-level" attacks by superworms like MyDoom and Netsky, research has shown that malicious traffic caused by remnants of old attacks account for between 4 and 12 percent of all the data moving across broadband networks on any given day.
The HNS DirecWAY service will deploy Sandvine's multi-layer Worm/DoS solution to build self-defending capability into its network.
In addition to mitigating malicious data traffic, Sandvine's technology will be used to identify infected subscribers and contact them via e-mail with recommendations on how best to disinfect their PCs.

STARBAND SATELLITE GOES DARK
As reported in the November 30, 2004 issue of SkyREPORT. "Intelsat said its Intelsat Americas 7 satellite experienced a sudden electrical distribution anomaly that caused the permanent loss of the
spacecraft during the weekend. The satellite loss impacted users with the StarBand service. Howard Lossing,
vice president of marketing for StarBand, said the satellite anomaly has impacted about 20,000 customers, and the company is working hard to restore service to those affected by the outage.
StarBand has capacity aboard another satellite, the AMC-4 spacecraft operated by SES Americom. "We are very thankful that we have more than one satellite," Lossing said. Also, StarBand is working to secure extra capacity, and is talking with Intelsat and other satellite companies about gaining that orbital space. "We feel that Intelsat should share our moral obligation to serve our customers," Lossing said. Once extra capacity is obtained, StarBand will rely on its team of certified installers to re-point customer dishes, Lossing said. The Intelsat Americas 7 satellite, which operated at 129 degrees, launched in September 1999 and covered the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Central America and parts of South America. The satellite was self-insured by Intelsat. Intelsat said it's working to restore service for the satellite's users, and most have found service aboard other satellites." Know any Starband subscribers in your market? What a great opportunity to help them understand the strength and value of the DIRECWAY program.
