Broadband by satellite is also characterized as High Speed Satellite Internet. This is because broadband is typically speeds at 256Kbps and above and some satellite providers will provide speeds in the range of 64Kbps up to 2.0 Mbps. A broadband connection typically comprises an unobtrusive device that sits between a PC and a cable in a wall. It might take the form of a wireless LAN transmitter or a Satellite Internet system and network card. Unlike a telephone, television (TV) or computer, it is not (at all) obvious by looking at this hardware what broadband can do, and why one would need it or even want it. High Speed (often times referred to as Broadband) fits into being both a service market and a hardware market. In a urban area it is a service market while in the rural area it is both. A technician would install the jack in the wall for the service to work and usually that jack is connected to a satellite dish that provides a High Speed Internet connection.
Generally speaking you would not sign up for a broadband service without first buying a computer and a network connection (like a DSL transceiver, a cable modem or a WLAN card or satellite system). But equally, it is possible to buy broadband off-the-shelf (Best Buy 2007) but that does not work for those that live in a rural area. Compared with other major innovations, High Speed Satellite Internet dubious products It can be many things but along with those different items comes new challenges. The fact that most High Speed Satellite services are partly substitutable by other services, for instance by narrowband dial-up Internet access, means that it is even harder to convince users that have not seen satellite Internet to buy it. It is important therefore, that satellite Internet providers focus clearly in their marketing on what consumers really need. The temptation is to focus just on speed of transmission, which is the one undeniable advantage of broadband over narrowband alternatives (see Figure 1.2). But while measures of transmission speed may be meaningful to engineers, may mean little to you (the average consumer). To communicate this advantage, it is vital to understand that it takes less time for page load, especially where pictures, avi files or other larger items may exist.
